Brrr. There was zero chance of a wardrobe malfunction for Nelly Furtado on Sunday when the Canadian pop star performed the Grey Cup halftime show in Winnipeg on live television. The B.C. native had too many layers of clothes on for anything to pop out.

She was bundled up in a black, biker-inspired ski jacket, white, equestrian-inspired hat, studded gloves and black tights that seemed to have extra padding underneath.

Furtado shines at half-time show

She started the 94th Grey Cup half-time show with a fitting tribute to football.

Even if Forca is about the wrong kind of football (the theme song for soccer's World Cup in 2002), and despite suggestions her performance might have been taped, Nelly Furtado's short performance didn't disappoint fans at Winnipeg's Canad Inns stadium.

Sporting fitted black pants and a cropped leather jacket, topped off with over-sized teardrop bling in her ears, the pop star rocked a three-song, pyrotechnic-packed set the audience swore was live.

"She sounded really good. She has amazing talent. I think she was singing live," said Rebecca, 15, whose only criticism was the short set, no more than eight minutes.

"But you can't expect a concert," she added.

It's "guaranteed" Furtado's hits, which included Promiscuous and Maneater, were actually live, at least in Dustin Materi's opinion. But he admitted one of his neighbours didn't think so.

"I heard one guy in front of us saying she was lip-synching," said Materi of Saskatoon, Sask.

The show's producer, John Michael Elder, said in a published report that it's difficult for Grey Cup performers to sing live.

It was live, the CFL's live show producer Jamie Nishino said yesterday through spokesman Jamie Dykstra.

"The mic was right there, you could see her breath," agreed 51-year-old John Telepchuk.

Whatever the case, "who cares" was the thought of one football fan from Dryden, Ont. "She's great looking," said Kevin Rankin, 27.

After the show, Furtado got into an SUV parked on the field and was whisked out of the stadium.

Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila, a Quebecer, belted out O Canada in English and French before the game. Cheerleaders at mid-field held a giant Canadian flag.

Avila's performance was followed by flyovers by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and a pair of CF-18 Hornets.

MANEATER singer Nelly Furtado claims she was once offered megabucks to pose for Playboy. She said: "I was offered half a million dollars to pose fully clothed. To do it would be a vanity thing, an egotistical thing. It's not to say I'd never do it. It's intriguing, it's tempting. It's got to be under the right terms. We'll see what happens. I am a late bloomer. I have grown into my sexuality, not with a false sexuality as a 20-year-old."

IT'S a huge day for Scots music fans with The Killers, George Michael and Noel Gallagher in Glasgow tonight. The first two's gigs are at the Carling Academy and SECC, while Noel is doing a Q&A at the Imax after a screening of the Oasis documentary Lord Don't Slow Me Down.

THEY may have been dropped from their record label but the Futureheads are going to be busy in the run-up to Christmas. They have joined forces with pals Field Music, The Golden Virgins and Kathryn Williams to form a new band to make a Christmas album. They've teamed up as The Joseph And Mary Chain for a version of The 12 Days Of Christmas. The track will appear on a compilation album, It's Not Like Christmas, and profits will go directly to support the work of the charity Shelter.

Furtado heats up halftime at Grey Cup

From world domination to Winnipeg in less than a week.

Whoa, Nelly!

Fresh off her World's Best Pop-Rock Artist win at Wednesday's 2006 World Music Awards in England, Victoria's Nelly Furtado returns to the motherland this weekend to headline the half-time show during Sunday's Grey Cup game at Canad Inns Stadium in Winnipeg.

"The Grey Cup is a Canadian tradition and the largest single-day sporting event in the country," said CFL Commissioner Tom Wright. "We're thrilled to have one of Canada's greatest talents entertain CFL fans everywhere on Grey Cup Sunday."

And while Winnipeg doesn't usually rank high on many Canadians' winter-getaway lists, Furtado is excited to be performing in her home country at an event many Canucks hold close to their hearts.

"The Grey Cup is a national treasure and I'm thrilled to be performing at this year's game in Winnipeg," Furtado said. "Year after year, the entertainment bar is raised and I'm looking forward to continuing the tradition."

Of course, one football half-time tradition the sexy singer won't want to continue would be the one started by Janet Jackson at the 2004 Superbowl.

After all, it is Winnipeg. The forecast calls for a low of -5.

That's pretty nippy.

Such A Good Thing

All Good Things (Come To An End) is our favorite song of Nelly Furtado's new album, Loose.

While Maneater is nicely hovering near the top of the charts in America, the Canadian crackerjack has chosen to release Good Things as the third single in Europe.

And, the video for the song is easily our favorite off the new record.

Not trying as hard as the others - no dance moves - the video (with its water motif and sepia tinted cinematography) reminds us of Nelstar's clip for Turn Off The Light.

Though we're sad that due to bullshit label politics, Coldplay's Chris Martin, who co-wrote All Good Things with Furtado, is not on the recorded or filmed version, the song and the vid are totally rad.

Nelly Furtado got too hot with her "Promiscuous" and "Maneater" videos, so now she's trying to cool down — by drenching herself with water in her next two clips.

"My friends make fun of me whenever water's pouring down on anyone, like I like to spend my spare time being wet," laughed the singer, who spoke on the phone from Portugal. "It's going to be my thing now."

Furtado shot the videos for "All Good Things (Come to an End)" and "Say It Right" back to back, with the latter premiering on "TRL" Monday (November 6). Stylistically, they couldn't be more different — apart from the waterworks. "All Good Things," which is featured on her album Loose as a duet with Coldplay's Chris Martin (see "Chris Martin Covers Jay-Z — And Other Scenes From Nelly Furtado's Loose"), finds Furtado frolicking with a male model in Puerto Rico, with lush landscapes of waves and trees interspersed throughout the love story. "There's a wet make-out scene, though we're not really making out," Furtado said. "It's very tropical and romantic. It reminds me of old Sarah McLachlan videos, it has that element of art to it. It's kind of like cinema."

But the moodier "Say It Right" features Furtado as more of a superstar and less a relatable romantic lead. She's a cross between a supermodel and a rock star, posing for glamour shots while waiting for her helicopter to take her away. "It's my first action thing, since '[I'm] Like a Bird' anyway," the singer said. "I have my own helicopter landing pad, and I take off and come back. It's a total rock-star moment. It's so iconic."

The directors, upcoming U.K. duo Rankin & Chris, wanted Furtado to be even more of a rock star. They asked her to wear a leather jacket for the scene, but she wanted to glam it up instead. "I was like, 'No way. If I'm going to come off a helicopter, I want to wear a hot dress,' " she said. "That's what makes it cooler. When I did the EMAs in Copenhagen, I decided to wear the most difficult gown possible onstage, so it would bring out an extra edge in me."

And where "All Good Things" reminds her of old McLachlan clips, "Say It Right" takes Furtado further back, to old Eurythmics videos, thanks to how she and Timabland interact. "The shots of Tim and me reminds me of the strange relationship Annie [Lennox] and Dave [Stewart] had, where ... you get this intense vibe from it. And Tim and me, we're partners, we vibe on a serious creative level, so the video captures that energy.

"It's all a throwback to the '80s," she laughed. "Like, the more surreal side."

Nelly Furtado to sing at Grey Cup

Promiscuous girl Nelly Furtado had better learn to cover up — at least for however long it takes her to sing a couple of windchill-accompanied tunes during the 94th annual Grey Cup half-time show at Canad Inns Stadium Nov. 19.

Organizers announced yesterday the crop top lovin’ R&B songstress will head up the mid-game entertainment spectacle.

Furtado won’t be the only pop gal workin’ her thang on game day. The latest Canadian Idol winner, multilingual Gatineau, Quebec native Eva Avila, 19, has been slotted in to sing the national anthem in English and French — and Spanish, if necessary.

The Grey Cup date is one of many in Furtado’s crazybusy schedule of public appearances and tours supporting her album Loose, which has garnered international kudos and a smash summer hit, Promiscuous, since its release in June. Loose is Victoria-bred Furtado’s third album, following 2003’s Folklore and her 2000 debut, Whoa, Nelly! featuring her Grammy-winning breakthrough single I’m Like a Bird.

Furtado and Avila join a slew of already announced performers hitting various city venues throughout Grey Cup week.

Headlining at the MTS Centre are crooner Kenny Rogers (Nov. 15), Toronto grunge group Three Days Grace (Nov. 16), surf songsters The Beach Boys (Nov. 17) and Manitoba’s own Tom Cochrane with Red Ryder (Nov. 18).
Three authentic Manitoba socials — kubasa, rye bread and the whole bit — are being held at the Convention Centre Nov. 16 - 18, featuring homegrown country boys Doc Walker, retro rocker Sam Roberts and CanRock outfit 54-40.

Other Grey Cup Festival activities include a family day at The Forks followed by a downtown parade Nov. 18 and CupFest (Nov. 17 & 18), a late-night bash for music fans to check out hot local acts at a number of clubs within stumbling distance of each other. CupFest bands and schedules will be announced next week.

Tickets for most events are available at Ticketmaster, including the Grey Cup game itself, which has yet to sell out.

How Teens Hear 'Promiscuous'

The song "Promiscuous Girl" has been everywhere lately: the top of the Billboard charts; the No. 1 iTunes download; and all across the radio dial.

The song is a dialogue between singer Nelly Furtado and the producer and musician Timbaland. Their flirting conversation in the song generated a conversation among several of the young men and women at Youth Radio.

SEXY SHOTS FOR REAL? NOT ON YOUR NELLY

MANEATER singer Nelly Furtado has admitted she went crazy after a men's magazine digitally undressed her for their cover shot.

Nelly has always turned down lucrative offers to appear in more revealing outfits, so she was shocked to find photographs of herself fully-clothed were doctored to show more flesh. She said: "I was the girl who'd said no to all that sexy stuff. So when I was handed a men's magazine with a picture of me half-naked on the cover, I felt completely shocked, then I just went crazy.

"The magazine had used a set of photographs of me in which I was fully clothed and superimposed someone else's midriff overmine to make it look as though I had hardly any clothes on. I couldn't believe it. I wanted to make them stop the magazine. Of course, it was too late."

Acalmer Nelly also revealed plans of her forthcoming tour.

She said: "I'm going to be touring in the new year - the US, Canada, Latin America, Japan, Australia, the UK and Europe right through to summer. The tour will probably be called Loose Ends because it's all the things I've always wanted to do in a show. I'm going to bring the fans a unique package of all my stuff - from my Latin and Spanish music to my Portuguese, hip-hop and pop music, in a fusion with movement and visuals.

"I love theatre. I love drama. So I'm going to really bring it into the show."

Nelly Furtado in Stratford

STRATFORD — It’s definitely a new and hotter Nelly out there.

Based on last night’s show by Canadian superstar Nelly Furtado at the Ovation Music Festival, she is the real deal when it comes to getting looser and happier on stage.

“This is my first time playing this in Canada,” Furtado announced early in her set before launching into All Good Things (Come to an End), the closing track on the hit album of summer 2006, Loose.

Before that, Furtado had been welcomed to the stage before a crowd estimated at 10,000 fans by two of Toronto’s hip-hop and R&B icons, MC Saukrates and soul diva Divine Brown. She had swivelled around the stage on impossible stilleto heels and slid out of her dark jacket for a daring, bare-armed look on a cool night.

She saved Promiscuous, her summer smash, for the encore. Its arrival after a sexy giggle from Furtado ensured that the set crossed over from the too-short to the Nelly adequate of an hour-plus.

“This is the hit of the year . . . let’s celebrate,” Furtado said before Saukrates joined her, stepping in beautifully for producer Timbaland. The band and dancers hit the groove and for a few amazing minutes a Perth County field shook like a corner of clubland.

Did I mention that the lightning that had flashed earlier over Perth County while Furtado and her crew waited in the tour bus went away for good, leaving the sky to the clouds and the moon — and the ground and the crowd to queen Nelly.

Memories are dim of Furtado at the Western Fair earlier in the decade on a September night when she was riding I’m Like a Bird and her a slightly goofy, sexy shyness. But this critic is sure the Nelly of 2000 and 2001 would never have shouted out so confidently: “Are you having a good festival so far? Will you help me sing this? Who knows the words?” Last night, it was clear Furtado knew the answer to the first two questions had to be “yes” and with a Bird chorus of thousands at the Ovation fest, the answer to the third question was “we all do.”

Back in the day, she didn’t have Saukrates and Brown — who sang a couple of her own hits during the wait for Nelly — to put Bird on a new, funky flight path.

Landing Furtado was a coup for the Ovation fest. She was in New York for the big Fashion Rocks benefit earlier in the week and will not be playing a major Canadian concert for the rest of the year, organizers say.

It is the second edition of outdoor, all-Canadian rock fest in a city known for Shakespeare and the Stratford Festival as its summer attractions. The Tragically Hip headline tonight and Bachman Cummings are tomorrow’s headliners. Ovation has a different, bigger location this year — with thousands of fans pressing up to the stage to get closer to the hot new pop and hip-hop queen.

Furtado’s double-platinum album Loose (Universal) is one of the summer’s biggest hits and has sold more than 250,000 copies in Canada. The hit single Promiscuous remained the No. 1 single in Canada for seven weeks running, while occupying the No. 1 spot in the U.S. for eight weeks. In addition to gracing the covers of numerous international magazines during the last few months, she won three Teen Choice Awards and was nominated in three categories at the 2006 MTV Music Video Awards.

“This is our new single,” she shouted before a terrific version of Maneater, proving that all the studio funk and style of Loose can be transferred to stage. Maneater has already been a No. 1 hit single in Britain and is now being pushed here. Furtado will perform it on the 2006 Canadian Idol finale on Sept. 17.

Last night’s bill included B.C.’s Hedley and Halifax-born, Toronto-based Sloan, two rock bands who were also part of the 2005 Ovation fest.

He's such a vocalist, he's so diverse and has so much finesse. I would love to be around that and see how it works."

Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtado is celebrating her sixth week at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.

Promiscuous, recorded with US rapper Timbaland and taken from her third album Loose, is now the longest-running US number one of the year.

But it still has some way to go to beat Kanye West's Gold Digger, which held onto the top spot for 10 weeks in 2005.

Earlier this week Furtado's Promiscuous video was nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards.

The 27-year-old, best known for her song I'm Like a Bird, scored a number one hit in the UK in June with Maneater.

Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, which held the top spot in the UK for nine weeks earlier this year, is a non-mover at number two in this week's Billboard chart.

Nelly Furtado - Loose

Nelly Furtado’s latest album, “Loose,” is different from her past albums. She has come a long way from her first album, “Whoa Nelly.” After her last album, “Folklore,” was somewhat less than successful, it seemed like the music industry had seen the last of Furtado.

However, she blew fans and the music world away with her songs “Promiscuous” and “Maneater.” These songs are just two chart-topping hits off this wonderful collection of songs. This CD is worth the buy if only to get those two songs. And yet the entire CD is worth your money. The instrumentals behind her memorable lyrics are just as striking and imaginative. Never before have I heard this type of sound.

I would recommend this to everyone, fans of her previous work or not. This is definitely a CD that is trying something new. It is worth the listen; listeners won’t be sorry.
